After years of displacement and uncertainty in India, 30 Tamil families and individuals originally from the Trincomalee District are voluntarily returning to their ancestral lands in Sri Lanka to rebuild their lives and establish a sustainable future in their communities. This initiative begins from the moment they return to Sri Lanka and focuses on supporting them through the critical period of resettlement—from their initial return and immediate needs to the point where they are able to establish stable livelihoods and live independently.
Returning home is only the beginning. For families who have spent many years away from their places of origin, rebuilding a life after return can bring significant challenges. Finding secure accommodation, accessing food and essential household needs, ensuring children can continue their education, and establishing a reliable source of income are all important steps toward achieving long-term stability.
Through this initiative, support will begin as these returning families and individuals re-establish themselves in Sri Lanka and will continue through the critical period of transition until they are able to become self-sufficient.
The project will support their resettlement in their ancestral communities within the Trincomalee District, providing a temporary but essential foundation for a dignified and secure return home.
The program is designed to address the immediate and practical needs of returning families while helping them move toward long-term independence.
Families will receive assistance with temporary accommodation as they re-establish themselves in their communities and work toward securing stable, long-term living arrangements.
Returning families will receive dry rations and basic daily necessities during the initial period of resettlement. This support will help ensure that families have access to essential food and household items while they work toward restoring their livelihoods.
For families with children, the transition back home can also mean adapting to a different educational environment after years away. The project will provide assistance to help children transition into local schools and continue their education with greater stability and confidence.
Long-term resettlement cannot depend on temporary assistance. The program will therefore guide adults toward sustainable livelihood opportunities, helping them identify appropriate income-generating options and take steps toward restoring their financial independence.
This initiative is not intended to provide indefinite assistance. Instead, it creates a temporary and focused framework of support during the crucial transition period following their return home.
By addressing immediate needs such as shelter, food and essential supplies, while simultaneously supporting education and livelihood development, the project aims to help returning families move progressively from initial stabilization to self-reliance.
The ultimate goal is to ensure that these families are not simply returning to their ancestral lands, but are given a meaningful opportunity to rebuild, regain independence, and establish secure and sustainable lives on their own soil.
