The Canadian Tamil Congress (CTC), in partnership with International Medical Health Organization (IMHO) Canada and Organization for Elangai Refugees Rehabilitation (OfERR) Ceylon, officially launched the 17th Annual Tamil Canadian Walk on July 29, 2026, bringing the community together for a campaign centred on solidarity, hope, and purpose. The walk will take place on Sunday, September 13, 2026, at Millennium Square Park, Frenchman’s Bay in Pickering, Ontario, with this year’s campaign supporting the resettlement of 30 displaced Tamil families and individuals from Trincomalee who are voluntarily returning home to Sri Lanka after years of displacement in India.

This year’s initiative will provide critical support to families as they begin rebuilding their lives on the ancestral lands they once called home in Trincomalee District, Sri Lanka. After years of displacement, returning home means starting again and rebuilding their lives with limited resources. The campaign will help bridge the difficult transition between their arrival and long-term self-sufficiency by providing immediate and temporary support, including secure interim housing, dry rations, and essential daily necessities. The initiative also recognizes that rebuilding a life requires more than immediate assistance. Funds raised through the Tamil Canadian Walk will help children transition into their communities and education systems while supporting adults as they pursue sustainable livelihood opportunities and work toward restoring their financial independence. Through this collective effort, the campaign aims to give returning families the stability, dignity, and opportunity they need to rebuild their lives with confidence and hope.

Speaking at the launch, Sharmilla Vignesparananthan, Coordinator of the Tamil Canadian Walk 2026, highlighted the circumstances facing Tamil families who have lived in India for many years without citizenship. “Approximately 100,000 Eelam Tamils in India have lived for years without citizenship, facing numerous challenges both within and outside refugee camps. Many now wish to voluntarily return and resettle in their homeland, Sri Lanka. With the sole aim of supporting these families in building a secure and dignified future, we are launching this initiative.”

Canadian Tamil Congress President Sritharan Thurairajah reflected on the impact of the Tamil Canadian Walk over the past 15 years and the community’s longstanding commitment to supporting meaningful causes. “For the past 15 years, thousands of people have walked with us. Every year, we have chosen an important cause and asked our community to stand behind it. Together, we have raised more than one million dollars through the Tamil Canadian Walk. More importantly, every dollar has gone toward a meaningful cause, and that is something our entire community can be proud of.”

Dr. Varagunan Mahadevan, Immediate Past President of International Medical Health Organization (IMHO) Canada, described the resettlement project as a cause that is particularly close to his heart. He reflected on the successful partnership between IMHO Canada and the Canadian Tamil Congress, which began in 2018 through the Home Palliative Care Initiative in Jaffna, Sri Lanka. He emphasized that humanitarian projects must begin by understanding the real needs of the communities they aim to serve, noting that every initiative undertaken is guided by a thorough needs assessment to identify the priorities of the people and determine how support can be delivered most effectively. He also highlighted the responsibility that comes with humanitarian work, stressing the importance of accountability, transparency, and careful planning in ensuring that every initiative creates meaningful and lasting impact.

OfERR Ceylon President Ms. Sinnathambi Sooryakumari also shared a video message highlighting OfERR Ceylon’s longstanding work in supporting displaced communities and refugee resettlement. She emphasized that for those who voluntarily return home, the journey involves starting over once again and rebuilding their lives after years of displacement. This initiative will help returning families regain their identity, dignity, hope, and courage as they begin rebuilding their lives independently in their communities. Through its resettlement and reintegration work, OfERR Ceylon has supported thousands of people in rebuilding their lives and reconnecting with their communities.

The 17th Annual Tamil Canadian Walk is more than a walk for the Tamil community. It is a humanitarian initiative that invites everyone to stand in solidarity with families who are taking the difficult step of returning home and rebuilding their lives. In his closing remarks, Kishan Pathmanadan, Coordinator of the Tamil Canadian Walk 2026, encouraged participants to share the campaign with their friends, coworkers, neighbours, community organizations, and networks. He emphasized that everyone can contribute to this initiative by spreading the message, participating in the walk, creating a fundraising team, or making a donation. He also encouraged individuals to fundraise independently or join together with their families, friends, coworkers, organizations, and community groups to support the campaign. He noted that every contribution will help provide returning families with essential support during this critical period of transition and help them move toward stability and self-sufficiency.

கனடியத் தமிழர் பேரவை (CTC), சர்வதேச மருத்துவ சுகாதார நிறுவனம் (IMHO) கனடா மற்றும் இலங்கை அகதிகள் மறுவாழ்வுக் கழகம் (OfERR) ஆகிய அமைப்புகள் ஒன்றிணைந்து, 16ஆவது ஆண்டு தமிழ் கனடிய நடைப்பயணத்தை ஜூலை 29, 2026 அன்று உத்தியோகபூர்வமாகத் தொடங்கியுள்ளன. ஒற்றுமை, நம்பிக்கை மற்றும் உயரிய நோக்கத்தை மையமாகக் கொண்டுள்ள இப்பிரச்சாரம், ஒட்டுமொத்த சமூகத்தையும் ஒரு மனிதாபிமான இலக்கின் கீழ் திரட்டியுள்ளது. இந்த ஆண்டுக்கான நடைப்பயணம் வரும் செப்டம்பர் 13, 2026 ஞாயிற்றுக்கிழமையன்று, ஒன்ராறியோவின் பிக்கரிங் நகரில் உள்ள பிரெஞ்சுமேன்ஸ் பே, மில்லினியம் ஸ்கொயர் பூங்காவில் (Millennium Square Park, Frenchman’s Bay in Pickering, Ontario) நடைபெறவுள்ளது. இந்தியாவில் பல வருடங்களாக இடம்பெயர்ந்து வாழ்ந்து, தற்போது தாமாகவே முன்வந்து தங்களின் சொந்த ஊரான திருகோணமலைக்குத் திரும்பும் 30 தமிழ் குடும்பங்கள் மற்றும் தனிநபர்களின் மறுவாழ்வுக்கு ஆதரவளிப்பதே இந்த ஆண்டுக்கான முதன்மை நோக்கமாகும்.

இந்தத் தொடக்க விழாவில் பேசிய தமிழ் கனடிய நடைப்பயணம் 2026இன் ஒருங்கிணைப்பாளர் ஷர்மிலா விக்னேஸ்வரானந்தன், இந்தியாவில் குடியுரிமை இல்லாமல் பல வருடங்களாக வாழும் தமிழ் குடும்பங்களின் சூழ்நிலையை விளக்கினார். இந்தியாவில் சுமார் 100,000 ஈழத் தமிழர்கள் அகதி முகாம்களிலும் வெளியேயும் பல சவால்களுடன் வாழ்ந்து வருவதாகவும், அவர்களில் பலர் தற்போது தங்களின் தாயகமான இலங்கைக்குத் திரும்பி கௌரவமான மற்றும் பாதுகாப்பான எதிர்காலத்தைக் கட்டியெழுப்ப விரும்புவதாகவும் குறிப்பிட்ட அவர், அதற்கு ஆதரவளிப்பதே இந்தத் திட்டத்தின் முதன்மை நோக்கம் என்றும் தெரிவித்தார்.

கனடியத் தமிழர் பேரவையின் தலைவர் ஸ்ரீதரன் துரைராஜா, கடந்த 15 ஆண்டுகளில் இந்தத் தமிழ் கனடிய நடைப்பயணம் ஏற்படுத்திய தாக்கம் மற்றும் சமூகத்தின் அர்ப்பணிப்பு குறித்துப் பேசினார். கடந்த 15 வருடங்களாக ஆயிரக்கணக்கான மக்கள் தங்களோடு இணைந்து நடந்துள்ளதாகவும், ஒவ்வொரு வருடமும் ஒரு முக்கிய நோக்கத்தை முன்வைத்து சமூகத்தின் ஆதரவைக் கோரியதன் மூலம் இதுவரை 1 மில்லியன் டாலருக்கும் அதிகமான நிதி திரட்டப்பட்டுள்ளதாகவும் பெருமிதத்துடன் தெரிவித்தார். மேலும், திரட்டப்பட்ட ஒவ்வொரு டாலரும் அர்த்தமுள்ள காரணங்களுக்காக மட்டுமே பயன்படுத்தப்பட்டுள்ளது என்பது ஒட்டுமொத்த சமூகமும் பெருமைப்படத்தக்க ஒன்று என்றும் அவர் குறிப்பிட்டார்.

சர்வதேச மருத்துவ சுகாதார நிறுவனத்தின் (IMHO) கனடா கிளையின் முன்னாள் தலைவர் டாக்டர் வரகுணன் மகாதேவன், இந்த மறுவாழ்வுத் திட்டம் தனது இதயத்திற்கு மிகவும் நெருக்கமான ஒன்று எனக் குறிப்பிட்டார். 2018ஆம் ஆண்டு யாழ்ப்பாணத்தில் தொடங்கப்பட்ட ‘ஹோம் பாலியேட்டிவ் கேர்’ (Home Palliative Care) திட்டத்தின் மூலம் CTC மற்றும் IMHO கனடா இடையே உருவான வெற்றிகரமான கூட்டாண்மையை அவர் நினைவு கூர்ந்தார். இத்தகைய மனிதாபிமானத் திட்டங்கள் மக்களின் உண்மையான தேவைகளை முழுமையாக ஆராய்ந்த பின்னரே தொடங்கப்பட வேண்டும் என்றும், இந்தத் திட்டம் வெளிப்படைத்தன்மை, பொறுப்புக்கூறல் மற்றும் முறையான திட்டமிடலுடன் நீண்ட கால தாக்கத்தை ஏற்படுத்தும் வகையில் செயல்படுத்தப்படும் என்றும் அவர் உறுதியளித்தார்.
